Pension Regulations for Ex-Servicemen

The Indian government has established comprehensive pension regulations to support ex-servicemen from the army, air force, and navy. These regulations include specific entitlement rules for casualty pensionary awards, ensuring that those who served the country have a safety net after retirement or in case of injury.

Types of Pensions Available

Ex-servicemen are entitled to various kinds of pensions based on their service records and circumstances. The most common types include:

  • Service Pension: This is provided at 50% of the last drawn emoluments or the average of the last 10 months, with a minimum amount of ₹9,000 per month.
  • Family Pension: Awarded to families at 30% of the last drawn reckonable emoluments, also with a minimum of ₹9,000 monthly.
  • Special Family Pension: Offered at 60% of the reckonable emoluments for deaths connected to military service.
  • Liberalized Family Pension: This ensures families of personnel killed in war receive pensions equal to the last drawn emoluments.
  • Disability Pension: Comprising service and disability elements, the latter is 30% of reckonable emoluments for those with 100% disability.
  • War Injury Pension: These rates depend on the rank and disability percentage.
  • Invalid Pension: Granted to personnel invalided out due to disability not attributable to military service.
  • Reservist Pension: Available after 15 years of combined service.

Pension Disbursement and Grievance Redressal

With over 26 lakh pensioners, payments are disbursed through banks, treasuries, and offices across India and Nepal. In case of grievances, the Defence Pension Adalat forums offer support, having processed grievances since 1987 with an average of 600-1000 representations each month. This systematic approach ensures that the concerns of ex-servicemen are addressed effectively.
